Executive Camp Staff

Rachel Saslove – Camp Director

For as long as she can remember (and even a little bit before), camp has been an integral part of Rachel’s life.  Known to camp friends and families as “Sas”, Rachel began her Jewish camp career as the “doctor’s kid” at Camp Shalom in Gravenhurst, Ontario.  From there, she spent the next 29 summers working her way through camping as a camper, CIT, and staff member.   During her first summer on staff, Rachel set her sights on being a Jewish Camp professional and never looked back.  Rachel comes to the JCC of Greater Ann Arbor and Camp Raanana after two years as the Assistant Director of Camp Interlaken JCC in Milwaukee, WI and four years as the Assistant Director at Camp Mountain Chai in San Diego, CA.  She is honored that her camping career also includes her participation in the Foundation for Jewish Camp’s Yitro Leadership Program, 10 summers on staff at URJ Camp George, and 2 summers on senior staff at the Wilshire Boulevard Temple Camps.

Born and raised in Toronto, Ontario, Rachel attended university at the University of Windsor in Windsor, Ontario.  She received her Master of Arts in Jewish Education and her Master of Arts in Jewish Communal Service from the Baltimore Hebrew Institute at Towson University in May 2011.

Rachel and her husband Joel (whom she met at camp!) are excited to join the Ann Arbor community; Rachel is thrilled to be a part of the JCC and Camp Raanana family.  She cannot think of a better place to share her passion for Jewish camping and Jewish education.   Her goal for this and every summer is to create a fun and lively Jewish community where children can form and nurture lasting friendships and relationships.

Tamara Lewis – Community Programs Office Manager

Tamara Lewis 2016

Born and raised in The Bronx, NY, Tamara earned her Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Bethune-Cookman University.  A self-described traveler, she has lived in Michigan off and on since 2004.  She returned to the Ann Arbor community in 2015, when she and her daughter Sydney joined the Jewish Community Center family.

Having spent the better part of a decade in Retail Management, Tamara is no stranger to organization and logistics.  As the Community Programs Office Manager, Tamara is the main point of contact for all of your Camp Raanana questions including handling all the camp registrations, schedule changes and payments.  She does the same for a variety of other programs including KidZone, the J’s youth program, Health & Wellness as well as other family programming.  She’s super excited for another summer of sun, activities, and memories.

Jake Nielsen – Assistant Camp Director (Summer)

Jake is returning to Camp Raanana for his 4th camp season!  Affectionately known to campers and staff as “Jake from State Farm”, we are thrilled he will be joining us for another summer of fun!

Jake was born in Ann Arbor, but spent most of his growing-up days in Grand Rapids.  He moved back to the Ann Arbor area to attend Eastern Michigan University, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education and Language Arts.  When he is not at camp, Jake teaches Language Arts at Tappan Middle School.  He and his wife Christina (who has also worked at camp!) have two dogs (Tuck and Jack), and this coming June they will be running the Dexter Half Marathon!  Jake looks forward to another summer building and developing relationships with the Camp Raanana staff and to providing a meaningful and fun camp experience for all the campers and staff.

Feel free to email Jake at [email protected].
